The Hitotsubashi University Graduate School of Law has entered into agreements for the Master of Law Double Degree Program (“Program”) with three universities: (1) Renmin University of China Law School, (2) National Taiwan University College of Law, and (3) Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences. Under the Program, if students study for one year each at Hitotsubashi University and the university where they are originally enrolled and complete designated requirements, they can earn two master’s degrees in two years at the earliest.

The Hitotsubashi University Graduate School of Law awards a Master of Laws degree to students who have completed the Program.

 

1.Program Outline

(a) Program schedule

 

Students participating in the Program will enter the master’s course at their home university and study there from September to March. Subsequently, they will study at Hitotsubashi University for one year starting April, and then will leave Japan and return to their home university.

 

 

 

(b) Number of credits required

 

Hitotsubashi University

Requirements for course completion

30 credits (including seminars and research guidance)

Passing a master’s thesis review and final examination

 (no credits awarded)

Type of degree earned

Master’s degree (Master of Laws)

 

(c) Transferring credits

 

The number of credits required for course completion at Hitotsubashi University under the Program is 30 (this number of credits is required also for students enrolled in regular master’s programs at Hitotsubashi University). Courses that can or must be taken by students participating in the Program are the same as those for students enrolled in regular master’s programs majoring in “jurisprudence and international relations.”

 

However, students participating in the Program can apply for transfer of credits earned at their home university. If approved by Hitotsubashi University, up to 15 credits can be transferred to fulfill the credit requirements.

2.Requirements for Participation in the Program

Applicants seeking endorsement for admission to the Program must fulfill all of the following requirements:

– Students who have passed the N1 level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

– Students who can secure funding necessary to study in Japan during the period of the Program

– Students enrolled at the National Taiwan University College of Law

– Students who have passed the N1 level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

– Students who can secure funding necessary to study in Japan during the period of the Program

Catholic University of Leuven
(KU Leuven)

– Students enrolled at the KU Leuven Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences

– Student who have a level of English or Japanese proficiency high enough to be able to engage in specialized research

– Students who can secure funding necessary to study in Japan during the period of the Program

3.University Expenses and Other Expenses

Even when students participating in the Program are studying at Hitotsubashi University, they need to be enrolled at their home university and pay tuition and other expenses to the university. During this period, they do not need to pay entrance examination fees, entrance fees, and tuition to Hitotsubashi University. However, they are responsible for all other expenses including expenses to travel to Japan and living expenses (housing expenses, book expenses, facilities expenses, supplies expenses, expenses for necessary language training, medical and travel insurance expenses, etc.).

 

 

 

4.Other Matters

When students participating in the Program are studying at Hitotsubashi University, they can receive support for living in the university dormitory and applying for scholarships.

 

 

 

5.How to Participate in the Program

To participate in the Program, you must apply for the Hitotsubashi University Master of Law Double Degree Program at your home university and pass the selection process at the university. Subsequently, if you receive endorsement for admission to Hitotsubashi University and pass the selection process at Hitotsubashi University, you will be accepted to participate in the Program.
