Welcome Message from Head of Department

Located in the Chiyoda Campus (in the Hitotsubashi district of Chiyoda ward in the heart of Tokyo where Hitotsubashi University was founded), the Graduate School of Law’s Department of Business Law (“HBL”) offers classes on weekday evenings and Saturdays. Since its establishment in 2000, HBL has developed an education that supports the continuing education of working professionals based on the philosophy of bridging theory and practice. The full-time faculty consists of a diverse range of faculty members who seek to blend practice and disciplinary knowledge, immersing students in a cutting-edge and stimulating program of legal education and practical legal skills. The campus location — easily accessible from Marunouchi, Otemachi, and other CBD workplaces — as well as the evening class times allow students to pursue further education while maintaining their careers.

As the issues facing lawyers and inhouse legal specialists become increasingly complex and specialized, the demand is growing for professionals with the risk management expertise to address new challenges. Our teaching team of academics at the cutting-edge of research and professionals at the forefront of practice seeks to nurture the next generation of legal problem-solvers in key areas of business law through interactive lectures and small-group seminars. In addition, HBL’s three signature programs —  Intellectual Property Strategy, Information Law (AI and big data) and Global Business Law (a program taught exclusively in English) — aim to produce highly-skilled professionals in fields where social needs are particularly strong.

In these turbulent times, it is critical for professionals to hone their expertise through continuing education. I hope that you will be able to build upon the knowledge you have already gained from your high-end careers by sharpening your abstract thinking skills during your time at HBL. As you confront the challenges posed by modern society, I look forward to sharing with you the joy of further your academic pursuits at HBL
